The Humane Society of McCormick County is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to help spread the message of responsible pet ownership and compassion for animals to the school age children of McCormick County.
This is a two-year term board position and what it lacks in monetary gain is abundantly compensated for in helping to foster future generations of individuals who will adopt kindness and care to animals as a way of life. What better way to help HSMC than to help grow our future volunteers and adoptive families?
The ideal candidate will be comfortable speaking to a full class room and be able to articulate the workings of HSMC and explain what it means to be a responsible pet owner, including the spay & neuter program and the proper care and feeding of animals.
As the Education Chair, you will research and secure various speakers to make an informal and interesting pet related presentation or “talk” once a month to the selected class. You will also be in close contact with the school Principal and participating teachers to discuss dates, topics and permissions required. Once a year, you will arrange for a Board member to come to discuss their role in the organization.
In addition to the monthly speaker, the Education Chair will arrange to transport a cat/kitten or dog/puppy to be featured during the day’s program and insure both the safety of the animal and the participating children during the presentation.
The Education Chair will develop various animal related programs or contests for classroom participation and reward children with a small treat or award when appropriate. On occasion, the chair may elect to quiz the children on what they have learned from a speaker.
In addition, as necessary, the Chair will pick up any aluminum cans the children may have collected for the recycle program. The Chair will also maintain a list of Committee members who assist the education program and attend monthly meetings to report on the status of related activities. The Chair will notify the HSMC President of any necessary absence.
